ok; this is just nuts. first snow is supposed to be .. you know, like my last entry. pretty. brief. doesn't stick, but reminds you what's coming.
by mid-afternoon we had a winter storm/travel advisory out here. it was totally ridiculous! i had suggested wife unit give me a call when she was leaving work; had been tossing around the idea of cooking dinner and wanted a potential arrival time to calculate cooking procedures. she called when she was on her way, and recommended i perhaps might want to go out and shovel the driveway. from my office window, things looked .. well, pretty, but not out of control. i admit, i chuckled. 'it is NOT that bad, only an inch or two, looks like.'
there was a pause.
then her voice came across my cell phone - 'have you BEEN outside lately?'
i checked the weather page and that was when, to my shock, i saw the winter storm warning. i was reading bits and pieces .. after each comment came the reply 'yes. that's happening NOW'.
since we have had some discussions in the past about me just trusting her judgement, i picked up the shovel and thought .. ok. if it makes her feel better, i will go scrape the walk. i glanced out the window, threw a sweatshirt on, no gloves, and headed onto the porch. where i was stunned to see like, several inches accumulated/drifted up on the porch already. ok. here's me, takin' my happy ass back in for a jacket and gloves.
walked back outside into a full blown snow storm. wth?? helLO! this is the first snow, not mid-january!
*cussing* blessed over-achieving weather gnomes. what the HELL?
was NOT looking forward to driving in to work tonight; i work in an adjacent city and under really good conditions it takes me about 20 minutes on the freeway.
i got out of bed, went to warm up the car, and had to shovel the walk/driveway AGAIN .. not to mention taking the shovel to my car before i could scrape the windows .. almost 5 inches had accumulated over my little vehicular transport that needed to be knocked off before i could do cool things like open the door or clear the windshield.
the weather/travel advisory didn't expire until 1am, and i wasn't leaving till after that; i expected a little bit of trouble getting in. it took me almost 45 minutes, and i think top speed on the freeway was 40 in a 70mph zone. maybe. in some places.
there were no such things as 'lanes'. i had sexy fantasies about being able to see where i was going. it was officially NO FUN.
finally got out there, and ran head first into mormon boy. told him i did NOT expect to see him there tonight; and he said he'd decided to stay and finish everything up rather than ride his bike home in the storm. at that point, he was down to like, 3 projects. i briefly pictured the nice warm bed i had pried myself out of thinking i was the only one going to be there to finish up the stuff that came in prior to the holiday.
then he shrugged again and said he needed the hours, so he was staying till everything was done; so i basically wished him a happy thanksgiving, turned around, got back in the car and drove home. so .. a pointless adventure, but dayum everything sure was pretty. well. what you could SEE of it, anyway.
by the time i made it back to the city it was snowing again. plows and salt trucks were out ahead of and behind me. i am GLAD we are staying in tomorrow/today and don't have to drive anywhere. yeesh!
